World Water Day is observed annually on March 22 to raise awareness about the vital importance of water to safeguarding human security and maintaining the health of the planet’s ecosystems.

This year’s theme, “Water and Climate Change,” highlights the urgent importance of strengthening water security and establishing access to a sustainable water supply in the face of changing climate conditions worldwide.

The observance will also raise public awareness about the many ways shifting atmospheric and oceanic conditions are reshaping the global hydrologic cycle.

Globally, 785 million people do not have access to a basic drinking-water service, and even for those who have access to water—the very resource on which a healthy, productive life depends—services are often inadequate to meet basic needs.

Across sub-Saharan Africa, 30 percent to 50 percent of rural systems are nonfunctional within five years of being built, and utilities in urban areas often ration water servicing.

Similarly, water is often contaminated from urban, industrial, and agricultural pollutants that can compromise non-piped water systems, even those that are classified as improved water sources. Many of those who lack access to basic water services also live in conflict-affected states with poor governance, insecure tenure, high rates of poverty, and weak institutions.

It is against this background that the Lagos Water Corporation unveiled 5-day programmes to celebrate the 2020 United Nation World Water Day to sensitize the general public, particularly Lagos residents on the State Government efforts/programs to close the Water demand gap in the State, towards providing potable water supply to every home in the State, adverse effects of persistent rain fall (climate change) on borehole water, amongst other related water issues.

The programmes are expected to commence tomorrow Thursday 19th March, 2020 with LWC Managing Director/CEO, Engr. Muminu Adekunle Badmus appearance on Traffic Radio show and LTV, “Lagos Today”.

This will follow with the display of LWC/UN. 2020 World Water Day Banners at all the Nine (9) Corporation’s Regional Business Offices, Major Waterworks and Water-House, Headquarters, Ijora on Friday 20th, March.

Other line up programmes to celebrate this yearly event are: Media/Press Conference on Sunday 22nd March, 2020 at the LWC Headquarters, Water-House Ijora, Lagos; Monday 21st, March is the day set aside for Health Walk with starting point from LWC Headquarters, Ijora and to round up the event, is the MD/CEO appearance on TVC talk show “Your view”, on Wednesday 25th March, 2020.
