WATER SELLERS COMMEND LAGOS WATER CORPORATION INITIATIVES

Water Sellers in Lagos State has commended Lagos Water Corporation for its initiative towards the sensitization of members of the Water Sellers in Lagos State i.e. Water Packagers, Vendors, Car Operators, Public Toilets and Bathroom Operators etc. on improved health and Safety of Water Supply from the Corporation, which gets to the public through their Operations and Reduction of Water Wastages. The Sensitisation meeting took place recently at the Corporation Headquarters, Ijora, Lagos.

While delivering a key note address at the forum, the Corporation’s Managing Director, Engineer Muminu Adekunle Badmus warned that ‘’it is illegal to sell illegally water obtained from LWC pipes without clearance from the Corporation, Connect illegally to any water pipe laid by the Corporation, Illegal bottling and packaging of water obtained from LWC pipes without clearance from the Corporation, as stated under the Lagos Water Sector Law No. 14a of 2004’’.

He stated that many sellers fail to meet the LWC requirements, which include the following: To apply to the Corporation to be registered as a Commercial Water Operator, To ensure assessment of premises and operating conditions to meet standard specification. To make prompt payment for water charges, To report of leakages and to avoid illegal connections and extension of service lines.

Engineer Badmus said, this is a dawn of a new era, and that any operators who violated of standard of operations and who do not pay their charges as at when due will face the full wrought of the law.

The MD further stated that there should be a network between the Stakeholders/Operators and Lagos Water Corporation as a way of improving Water Supply in the State, and enjoined all the un-registered water sellers to avoid being sanctioned.

In his own contribution, the Executive Secretary of Lagos State Water Regulatory Board, Arc. Ahmed Kabir Abdulahi said the only credible water is LWC Water, because it conforms with the World Health Organisation Standard (WHO), and advised that people should migrate from borehole to LWC Water because it is only reliable source. He further stated that if it is a must to dig a borehole, then such person must seek the Government permit and also deal with professionals or experts.

The Assistant General Manager, Lagos Water Corporation, Mrs. Azeezat Modupe Sadiq urged the general public to report leakages, burst pipes and Vandalization through the help lines/Customer Care Lines: 07045973012, 07045973013, and appeal the customers to always pay for their Water rates as at when due, as such money is used to procure chemicals such as Alum, Hydrated lime etc for the treatment of the water.

The Assistant Chairman of Water Sellers Association in Lagos State, elder James Odedeyi commended the Lagos Water Corporation MD and the Management initiatives, and prayed that all their efforts will not be in vain.  He concluded that such meeting should be an on-going event to offer suggestions and rub minds together as a way of improving water supply in Lagos State, he concluded.
