LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT DECRIES DRILLING OF BOREHOLES
The Lagos State Government has decried the drilling of borehole in search of Water in the State. The State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode represented by the State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Babatunde Adejare at the 2016 World Water Day event, made this assertion while delivering a welcome address on behalf of the Governor, at the Excellence Hotel, Ogba.
In his speech, the Commissioner stated that the State Government acknowledged the deficit in supplying of potable water to the residents of Lagos State, and said the intention of the Government is to discourage the drilling of boreholes by individual because of the inherent danger and risk to the environment. The Commissioner further stated that the cost of drilling borehole or patronizing the water vendor is far more expensive compared to getting Water from the Government.
While speaking at the event, the Lagos Water Corporation, Assistant General Manager, Mrs. Azeezat Modupeola Sadiq, representing the Managing Director, Engr. Muminu Adekunle Badmus spoke from the angle of the event’s theme: “Water and Jobs”, stated that if there is adequate water supply in the system, this can be translated to Job opportunity, and therefore, help the Government to reduce unemployment in the State. The AGM reiterated that the borehole drillers should register with the Corporation or face the wrought of the law, she concluded.
In his own contribution, the Executive Secretary of Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission, Arc. Ahmed Abdulahi said the yearly event provides avenue for the Government to draw the attention of all water Stakeholders to the importance of fresh water and how water can be sustainably conserved. He also identified ‘’water and jobs’’ as a major areas that can help the Government over unemployment in the State.
